The dust has finally settled after the release of the "The new iPad". Call it "The new iPad" or "iPad 3" but now we know what it is all about. Whenever Apple announces any product release there is a huge expectation from its fans. Apple fans all over the world expected an iPhone 5 but what they really got was an iPhone 4S which is nothing but an enhanced iPhone 4 with a better camera but with no significant design changes. They had to face similar disappointment after the release of iPad 3 as well. We will take a look at what we got and what was expected but is missing in iPad3.

There is no significant change as far as iPad 3 design is concerned, although it is an ounce heavier than the iPad 2. All the changes are on the inside. It should be fine with most people but if you were expecting a whole new look in iPad 3, I guess you will have to wait.

Processor:

Prior to the launch of iPad 3 there were lot rumours about the processor that would power the 3rd generation iPad. Many people thought that it would be an A6 processor but it turned out to be A5X. Its a modified version of the A5 processor found in iPad 2. According to Apple the A5X is four times more powerful than Nvidia Tegra 3 chip. Its good to hear that but after all its not A6.

Display:

The new iPad can boast of a 9.7 inch Retina display with a resolution of 2048x1536. Apple met our expectations as far as display is concerned.

Battery Life:

There is good news for power users. If you thought that the new Retina display and the A5X chip  would come at the cost of battery life, you were wrong. Apple claims that the battery last for 10 hours just as its predecessor iPad 2 and for 9 hours if you are on 4G.

Camera:

There is a huge leap as far as camera is concerned. iPad 2 camera was just not good enough for photography. The new iPad 3 has a 5-megapixel iSight camera with features like auto-focus, face detection, tap to focus etc. It can also shoot 1080p full HD videos. There is no change in the front VGA camera.

Memory:

The iPad 3 has a maximum storage capacity of 64 GB with no expansion slot. If you were expecting a 128 GB version, I guess you will have to wait.

Operation System:

There were rumours that Apple might release iPad 3 with iOS 6 but what we got is iOS 5.1. They plan to release iOS 6 by this year end. You can upgrade your iPad 3 to iOS 6 when its released. We have to look out for latest updates from Apple on this. They generally tend to reveal their plans at the last moment.

Siri:

Siri is the voice controlled iPhone virtual assistant. Everyone expected Siri to be there on the new iPad but its not. The new iPad allows users to dictate e-mails but there is no Siri as of now. It is expected to be there by the end of this year.

Overall, I would give the new iPad a 4.5 out of 5. We see a few short-comings just because there is a huge expectation whenever Apple announces any product launch. If you don't have an iPad grab one now. Apple iPad 2 prices have dropped and if you don't believe in having the latest gadget, you can grab an iPad 2 for a little less than $400.
